Get Wildfire Ready at Skyline Ridge Workshop September 19
Join us and your neighbors at our second Skyline Ridge Wildfire-Ready Workshop. We are proud to offer this event for community members in the Skyline Ridge area and surrounding neighborhoods. This day-long event offers three workshops from local experts on how to increase the chance of your family and your home surviving a wildfire and how to improve the resiliency of your forest. Local community groups and agencies will also be sharing information and resources on wildfire preparedness during lunchtime tabling sessions.
This event is free and lunch will be provided. We’ll have a raffle to give away tools that can help you navigate an emergency, manage your landscape, and remove fuels.
Skyline Ridge Wildfire-Ready Workshop

Increase your safety margin in a fire–invite a neighbor to join you! Please make sure all members of your party have completed a registration if you plan to attend. Capacity of the Grange limits our registration for this event to 100 at this time. Registration will close at 8pm on Tuesday, September 15, or sooner if the event reaches capacity.
This event is presented by West Multnomah SWCD, Skyline Grange #894, Skyline Ridge Neighborhood Association, Oregon State Fire Marshal, Portland Fire and Rescue, Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue, and Multnomah County Office of Emergency Management.
Accessibility: This event will be indoors and outdoors at Skyline Grange, which has some uneven terrain and a sloped field. Please dress for the weather and uneven terrain. Bathrooms and the session on evacuation are indoors and wheelchair accessible. This event will be hosted in English, but translation services are available if requested in advance. Please note this on your registration if needed.
These workshops will be most useful for residents of higher-risk, rural, forested areas. West Multnomah SWCD is also co-hosting a Tryon Creek Wildfire Ready event in August, for residents in SW Portland and the surrounding areas. Workshops
All participants will rotate through three informational sessions.
Your Home Can Survive a Wildfire
Taught by Simone Cordery-Cotter, Fire Risk Reduction Specialist at the Oregon State Fire Marshal, Kim Kosmas, Senior Public Education Officer with Portland Fire and Rescue, and Heather Carpenter, Deputy Fire Marshal with Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue.
Participants will learn:
- How homes ignite during wildfires.
- Strategies for hardening the home against ignitions.
- Ideas for creating defensible space.
- Tools to organize neighbors and enhance collective efforts.
Plan Your Escape
Taught by Kirsten Kuppenbender with Multnomah County Office of Emergency Management, Deputy Sheriff Monda with Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, and Joe Weiland with Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue.
Participants will learn:
- How agencies determine, coordinate, and communicate evacuation levels
- How to receive most accurate, up-to-date evacuation notifications
- How to prepare in advance for evacuation and action to be taken at each level.
- How to make good decisions to evacuate by planning ahead.
Sustain a Resilient Landscape
Taught by Laura Taylor, Forest Conservationist at West Multnomah SWCD and Rachel Mauch, Community Wildfire Forester at Oregon Dept. of Forestry
Participants will learn:
- Strategies for accomplishing fuels reduction work in their landscape.
- How to prioritize fuels reduction work.
- Strategies to make the work sustainable for the long-haul.

- 9:30 am Begin first rotation session
- 10:30 am Break, and move to second rotation location
- 10:45 am Begin second rotation session
- 12:00 pm Lunch, tabling, neighborhood networking, and raffle
- 1:45 pm Begin third rotation session
- 3:00 pm Closing comments
- 3:15 pm Event ends
