Located in SW Portland, the Hayhurst school garden had been neglected for several years and was in bad need of repair and reinvigorated parent and teacher engagement. The existing garden area also had a small depaved raingarden area with storm water drainage issues. Several parents took the initiative to gather information and resources from District staff, and then used those resources to quickly create dramatic improvements to the garden. They coordinated several parent/student work parties to repair the edible garden beds and replant the rain garden with native wetland plants.
The garden is now becoming an integrated part of classroom instruction with fun activities including a sunflower planting activity for the kindergarten class, introducing mason bees, teaming up with the school librarian on the development of an outdoor reading area, and developing a School Garden Club. At the heart of this garden’s blossoming success is the dedicated participation of student and parent volunteers.
