West Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District (WMSWCD) started work almost 70 years ago under the name Sauvie Island Soil Conservation District. Since 1944, the District has maintained closed ties with farmers and public and private landowners on the Island through conservation, outreach and planning programs. To date, most of the farmers on the Island have conservation plans either through the NRCS or WMSWCD and a majority of the landowners have attended one of our numerous workshops at one time or another.
WMSWCD is currently working on a wide range of projects on the island; some with individual private landowners and other large-scale projects with numerous public and private organizations. One of the largest projects is the Sturgeon Lake Restoration project.
