Remembering Kim Peterson, 1949-2024

In August, 2024, Kim Peterson, passed away after an illness at the age of 74. Kim spent her entire life on Sauvie Island, where her family managed a 250-acre dairy farm during her upbringing. Over the years, the farm evolved into a beef operation and now includes grass, food crops, and duck lakes. Kim had a deep connection with the West Multnomah SWCD, following in the footsteps of her father, Elmer Peterson, who served as Treasurer for many years. Kim herself took on the role of Treasurer for a time and was a dedicated board member from November 1999 until her passing– an incredible 25 years of service.

In recognition of Kim and her family’s longstanding dedication to the District, she was honored at the 2016 Annual Meeting with a special award and a video highlighting the Peterson family’s significant contributions.

Kim’s family let us know she passed away peacefully on August 8, 2024. Her contributions to the District will not be forgotten. Our staff and board shared some memories of her:

“Kim was a very dedicated board member over the years. Even in times of failing health she continued to participate. As an islander since 1955 we crossed paths often over the years and she always willing to discuss island issues.” – Bob Wiley, associate board member

“What I can share with absolute certainty was that she was definitely a historian around Sauvie Island. She shared many stories about ‘old-timers’ and who had what crops and livestock where on the Island and for how long. It was truly delightful. Knowing very little about Sauvie Island, I walked away from our visit feeling educated about the history of the Island.” –Lorrie Conway, Fiscal and operations manager

“Until recent months, Kim came to board meetings, either in person or by phone. Her in-person attendance was at significant expense to herself, because she needed to hire a driver/caregiver to transport her. She could have skipped, but her sense of devotion to WMSWCD was strong enough that she only missed a meeting if she absolutely had to.” – Shawn Looney, board member
