Sign Up for Fall Ash and Oak Folk Workshops

This fall, we’re looking for Ash and Oak Folk, a new type of community scientist, to learn to identify threatened oak and ash trees and make reports of healthy and sick ones to the proper scientific sources. If you’d love a mix of scavenger hunt, nature walk, and science project, this is the event for you.

We’re hosting four workshops to get as many people as possible to participate in learning about the Oregon Oak and Oregon Ash trees and the invasive EAB and MOB bugs that are threatening them in our region. Then, participants will learn how to track trees on the iNaturalist app, and make reports of sick trees on OregonInvasivesHotline.org.

Workshop Dates and Registration

Will you become an Ash and Oak Folk? The content of each workshop is the same, it is not a commitment to attending four workshops. Children are welcome to these events. Some snacks will be provided. We recommend participants bring a water bottle, use sun protection, and wear walking shoes, and a mobile device with the iNaturalist app installed, if you can. Click a date to register.

Tuesday, September 30, 5:30-7:30 pm: Howell Territorial Park, 13901 NW Howell Park Rd, Portland OR 97231

Saturday, October 4, 10 am-12 pm: Howell Territorial Park, 13901 NW Howell Park Rd, Portland OR 97231

Online via Zoom, October 14, 5-6pm. A Zoom link to join will sent to registrants 24 hours before the event. A recording will be available after the event.

Once you register, a confirmation email will be sent to you, and an email from a conservationist at West Multnomah SWCD during the week of your workshop with a reminder of any parking or other details.

Each in-person workshop is currently capped at 35 attendees so everyone has a chance to hear and ask questions. If there are cancellations, they may reopen, so check back if you find a closed session. We are not currently running waitlists.
